Worship is far more than an element of a church service. It is a response to who God is, what He has done, and the grace we have received through Jesus Christ.
In John 4, Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman whose understanding of worship had been shaped by where people believed worship should take place. Jesus redirected the conversation from external circumstances to what truly matters. The Father is seeking true worshipers who will worship Him in spirit and truth.
We may not debate where God is to be worshipped, but we can still become distracted by external things. We may focus on the style of music, the songs we sing, or whether we prefer to stand or sit. But when worship becomes centered on our preferences, we can lose sight of the One who deserves all our praise.
To worship in spirit means our worship comes from a heart made alive to God through faith in Jesus Christ. To worship in truth means we worship God according to who He is, not according to our feelings or who we want Him to be.
Why do we worship?
First, we worship because God is worthy. Revelation 4:11 reminds us that He created all things. God does not become worthy because we worship Him. Our worship simply recognizes the greatness that already belongs to Him.
Second, worship flows from redemption. Through Christ, we have been forgiven and brought into relationship with God. We have received grace we could never earn and salvation we could never accomplish for ourselves. We do not worship to earn God’s grace. We worship in response to the grace we have received.
Finally, worship involves our whole life. Romans 12:1 calls us to offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. Worship is expressed through obedience, surrender, serving, giving, prayer, and gratitude.
If our lives belong to God, then how we live on Monday is just as much a part of our worship as what we sing on Sunday.
So do not let worship end when the music stops. Let your whole life become an expression of worship to God wherever you are. He is worthy. He has saved us. And our whole lives belong to Him.
