Possessing the Promise

design (22)

In Joshua 1 the Israelites are days away from entering the Promised Land. They still have to pass through the Jordan river and God warned of people inhabiting the land they are to possess. Joshua instructs the leaders to prepare the people for battle. To possess the promise, they would have to fight for it!

“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.” 2 Corinthians 1:20

Have you heard it said, a “promise is only as good as the one who made the promise.” Every promise God has made will be fulfilled. God will not withhold a single promise from you. It’s never a question of “Yes” or “No” concerning God’s promises, they are always “YES!” The bible is filled with promises. But some promises will require you to fight for it.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

Paul, the writer of Ephesians, unveils a realm in which everyday life is affected by and influenced. He defines it as authorities, cosmic powers over this present darkness, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

These spiritually dark forces are working against God and His people. These forces of evil are doing everything they can to obstruct God’s promises and answered prayers from reaching you, (see Daniel 10).

“so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

God’s word is His promise. What God has spoken will not return void but will accomplish all that He has said. God’s promises are fully-assured. God has never defaulted on a promise. Yet there are some promises we must fight for.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:4

God has made provisions for us to engage this spiritual battle with weapons that are not carnal in nature. The spiritual realm does not work according to natural laws but is bound by spiritual laws. This realm in which God establishes the rules requires spiritual weapons. Prayer and fasting are two of the weapons given to us to exercise our spiritual authority over our enemy.

When Daniel prayed and fasted the spiritual obstruction was broken, and Daniel received an answer. When Esther prayed and fasted, the plan to exterminate the Jews was exposed and prevented. When you pray and fast you are engaging the enemy with weapons that he is powerless to counter against.

To possess God’s promises we must learn to pray the scripture. Possessing The Promise scriptures. We can only secure what God has declared. Download this PDF file containing a handful of God’s promises. If you have a need that corresponds to His promise, take it to prayer.

Knowing that God’s promises are always “yes” and that His word never returns void, are you willing to fight to possess the promise? Turn to prayer (and fasting when necessary) and take hold of God’s promises for your life!
