Acts 17:10-15 gives us a picture of discipleship. When Paul and Silas arrived in Berea, the people listened eagerly, searched the Scriptures daily, and allowed God’s truth to lead them to faith.
The Bereans were teachable, but they were not gullible. They received Paul’s message with an open heart while measuring everything he taught by the full counsel of God’s Word. That is a reminder for the church.
A preacher’s charisma, a large platform, or a strong social-media following does not make a message true. Truth is not determined by popularity. Every teaching must be tested by Scripture.
This discernment does not happen by accident. It grows as we consistently open the Bible. The Bereans did not treat Scripture as an occasional reference point. They examined it daily. They cross-examined what they heard to see whether it was true.
Daily time in God’s Word is more than gaining information. Jesus said His words are spirit and life. Scripture feeds our spirit, strengthens faith, brings peace, and gives wisdom for life.
But our spiritual appetite can grow weak when other appetites take first place. Entertainment, social media, hobbies, and good activities can become distractions when they replace time with God.
The principle is simple: the appetite you feed grows stronger, and the appetite you starve grows weaker.
When we feed on God’s Word, our hunger for His presence and truth grows. When we continually fill our minds with lesser things, our desire for Scripture can fade.
The Bereans also remind us that truth should lead to action. Many believed because they heard the gospel, examined it in Scripture, and responded in faith.
God’s Word is not meant merely to fill our minds. It is meant to transform our lives.
As we hear and obey it, we walk in the freedom Christ gives, experience growth, and bear fruit that points others to Jesus.
Discipleship is not complete because we finish a class, serve in ministry, or have followed Jesus for years.
We never outgrow our need for God’s Word. Every believer must stay rooted in Scripture, examine it carefully, and live it faithfully.
What is shaping your appetite today?
Is something dulling your desire for God’s Word?
Put God first again and ask Him to make His truth more than information in your life.
Let it become the foundation that forms you, frees you, and leads you forward.
