Have you ever been to a rodeo and watched as a bull rider fights to stay on for eight seconds? The strategy is simple: hold on tightly, no matter how hard the ride becomes.

In 2 Peter 3, Peter gives believers a similar challenge. He is not introducing a new truth. He is calling believers back to what they already know. The issue is not whether God has forgotten His promise, but whether we will keep trusting His promise while we wait.

Peter first tells us to hold on to the Word we have received. Not every voice that sounds spiritual is leading us toward Jesus. False teaching often mixes truth with error, making deception sound convincing. 

Spiritual discernment helps us recognize what comes from the Holy Spirit, what is rooted in deception, and what leads to freedom instead of bondage.

Peter also warns that scoffers will question the promise of Christ’s return. They ask, “Where is the promise of His coming?” Their argument assumes that God is absent and uninvolved. 

But Peter reminds us that God created the world by His Word, judged evil in Noah’s day, and continues to sustain creation. God has acted before, and He will act again.

Jesus’ first coming gives us confidence that His second coming will happen just as promised. Still, waiting can be difficult. God’s timing rarely matches ours, but His timing is always better. What appears to be delay is actually mercy.

2 Peter 3:9 explains that God is not slow. He is patient because He does not want anyone to perish but wants people to come to repentance. Every additional day is another opportunity for someone to turn from sin and receive salvation through Jesus.

God’s patience, however, does not mean Jesus will never return. Peter says the day of the Lord will come like a thief, suddenly and unexpectedly. That is why we must remain spiritually alert.

The longer we wait, the more important it becomes that we do not drift, grow weary, or become deceived. God’s patience is not a reason to loosen our grip on truth. It is a reason to live faithfully, share hope boldly, and remain close to Jesus with confidence throughout each passing day.

Hold on to the Word. Hold on when doubt comes. Hold on because Jesus is coming again.

And if you are not right with God, do not wait. Today is the day of salvation.
