Loved to Love

The Christian life is not about trying harder. It is about growing closer to Jesus. Galatians 5 reminds us that spiritual fruit is not manufactured by human effort. It is produced by the Holy Spirit as we walk with Him and remain connected to Christ. God’s plan is simple: you abide, He produces.

The first fruit listed in Galatians 5 is love. This is not merely human affection or a feeling that changes with circumstances. The New Testament word agape describes sacrificial love that acts for the good of another because they need it, not because they deserve it. Agape gives without first asking what it will receive in return. This is not natural love. It is divine love.

Scripture shows the transforming power of this love.

  • Love makes room for grace, forgiveness, and restoration.
  • Perfect love casts out fear.
  • Love holds people together and keeps differences from becoming divisive.
  • Most importantly, Jesus said love would identify us as His followers.

Before the world reads the Bible, they will discover something about God by the way Christians love one another.

This kind of love begins with understanding how deeply we are loved by God. You are fully known by Him and still fully loved by Him. You do not have to perform for His love, compete for His love, or live afraid that His love will disappear when you fail. God wants you to live secure in the reality of His everlasting love.

Yet His love was never meant to stop with you. We are not containers of God’s love. We are funnels. “We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19. The more deeply we understand how undeservedly God has loved us, the more freely we can extend that love to others.

Agape love reaches beyond those who love us back. Loving someone does not mean approving everything they believe, do, or the way they treat us. Romans 5:8 reminds us that God loved us while we were still sinners. His love did not approve our sin, affirm our sinful choices, or accept our rebellion. Yet He loved us and Christ died for us.

So what are you doing with the love you have received? The Holy Spirit is producing agape love in you so His transforming love can flow through you.

Receive His love. Live secure in His love. Then let His love flow through you to others.
