Every one of us is becoming someone. The world, media, and culture are constantly pressing their values and ideas upon us, telling us how to think and live. The question is not whether you are changing, but what you are changing into.
The good news is that the Christian life is not about trying harder to make yourself more spiritual. It is about growing closer to Jesus. Authentic spiritual fruit is not behavior modification. It is the result of the Holy Spirit transforming us from the inside out.
Paul gives us the key in Galatians 5:16: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Walking by the Spirit is not a mysterious feeling or emotion. It is a daily willingness to listen to His voice, follow His leading, and surrender our thoughts and actions to Him. The Spirit always leads us according to the truth of God’s Word.
That matters because every believer faces a battle between the flesh and the Spirit. Our flesh is quick to anger, take offense, withhold forgiveness, and give in to temptation. No amount of willpower, self-help, or religion can win that battle for us. But as we yield to the Holy Spirit, He empowers us to overcome the flesh and increasingly forms the character of Jesus in us.
Jesus described the same truth in John 15. A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It bears fruit because it remains connected to the vine. In the same way, spiritual fruit is produced, not manufactured. We abide in Christ, and He supplies what we need.
Sometimes that growth includes pruning. God may confront our pride, sinful habits, unhealthy relationships, comforts, or misplaced priorities. Pruning can be uncomfortable, but it does not mean God is disappointed with us. It means He is invested in our growth. He removes what hinders greater fruit so that our lives can increasingly reflect Jesus. Even conviction and loving correction can become tools God uses to shape us, strengthen us, and produce greater fruit.
So ask yourself: Am I striving or abiding? Am I walking by the Spirit? What is God trying to prune from my life?
Do not begin by trying to manufacture more love, joy, peace, or patience. Fix your attention on Jesus. Walk by the Spirit. Remain connected to the vine.
The fruit will follow.
You abide. He produces.
