Peter wrote his second letter knowing his time was short. These were not casual thoughts. They were final words from a pastor who wanted believers to stand firm through trials, false teaching, and pressure from the world.
His message in 2 Peter 1:12-21 is simple but deeply needed: remember the truth.
Peter does not tell the church to chase something new. He reminds them of what they already know. They were established in the truth, yet they still needed to hear it again. That is not weakness. That is discipleship.
We all forget. The urgent crowds out the important. Distractions dull conviction. Before long, the truths meant to shape us can become background noise.
What we stop remembering stops shaping us.
That is why Scripture must stay in front of us. God’s Word awakens us, corrects us, strengthens us, and keeps our eyes fixed on Jesus. We do not read the Bible once and put it away. We return to it again and again because God’s truth continues to shape our first response in every matter of life.
Peter also reminds believers that the truth they remember can be trusted. He says the message of Jesus is not a cleverly devised myth. He was an eyewitness of Jesus’ majesty. On the mountain of transfiguration, Peter saw the glory of Jesus revealed. He heard the Father say, “This is my beloved Son.”
Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus, representing the Law and the Prophets. Then they disappeared, and only Jesus remained. The message was clear: Jesus is the fulfillment of all God had spoken. He stands above every other voice. So we must listen to Him.
Peter then points us to Scripture as a lamp shining in a dark place. This world is filled with confusion, temptation, and false teaching, but God has not left His people without light. The Bible was not produced by human opinion. Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
The world may grow darker. False teaching may grow louder. Our hearts may grow distracted. But the Word of God remains trustworthy.
Do not put Scripture on the shelf. Let it remind you, awaken you, correct you, and lead you until the day Christ returns.
Remember the truth. Listen to Jesus. Walk by the light of His Word. Each day, let revealed truth become the voice that steadies your soul.
